It’s been 13 years since his infamous case and ever since then, guilty Salman has left no stone unturned to redeem his sins. Over the past decade, Salman Khan has done unparalleled humanitarian work which led the courts to cut his sentence from 10 to 5 years. Here are 8 things that completely justifies that Salman Khan changed after his 2002 hit and run case.
1) The Veer Initiative
An initiative for the differently-abled children, Salman Khan along with The American India Foundation are working on creating avenues where these children can be brought to the mainstream with the focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities. The initiative is also training over 1000 such people so that they can get appropriate employment. How many celebs you know are doing that?
2) Paid Over Rs 40 Lakh As Fine On Behalf Of 400 Inmates Languishing In Jails
Despite completing their term, over 400 inmates were languishing in over 63 UP prisons because they were unable to pay the fine. In January 2012, Salman’s Being Human foundation took notice of the situation and paid over Rs 40 lakh and freed approximately 400 inmates from jails.
3) Free Treatment To Children Suffering From Heart Diseases
After meeting a 19-month old girl called Roona Begum from Agartala who had been suffering from hydrocephalus (a medical condition which results in a swollen head due to accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in her brain cavities), Salman decided to start a medical foundation called Little Hearts. The organization is dedicated to providing free treatment to children with congenital heart defects and has treated over 100 children thus far.
4) The Family Who Claims Salman Changed Their Destiny By Adopting Them
When Salman was shooting in Pahalgam, 75-year-old lady, Zaina Begum, approached Salman with an 'application' for help. Zaina Begum with her 40-year-old widowed daughter Dilshada Jaan and four grandchildren were on the verge of starvation. When Salman took notice of the situation, he put her eldest grandson, 18-year-old Gowhar Ahmad Bhat to work on the sets and even assured him that he would be flown to Mumbai and work with his crew. A witness quoted that “Salman assured him that he and his family would never want for anything again”.
5) Help In Giving A Better Life To Children With Severe Facial Deformities
The love Salman Khan has for children needs no introduction. Salman Khan has been very closely associated with Maaya Foundation to provide free treatment to children with severe facial deformities, also known as Craniofacial Deformities.
6) Adopting 200 Villages And Helping Marathwada During The 2013 Draught, When The Government Failed
Salman Khan came to the rescue of the thousands of farmers in Maharashtra when the government failed to provide water to the draught hit villages in Marathwada district. After learning the fact that the villages didn’t have tankers to store water, Salman sent 2,500 water tankers with a storage capacity of 2,000 litre each to the draught-affected districts. The same day he adopted around 200 villages.
7) An ‘Endless List’ Of Educational And Housing Help To Impoverished Children
The Akshara school, Mumbai, Aseema—a Mumbai based NGO, Career Development Centers in association with Coca Cola, supporting MPSM’s programs for the upliftment of tribal and farming communities in Maharashtra…The list of Salman Khan’s association and most of all ‘personal involvement’ with such projects is endless. Thousands of homeless children are simply alive and getting an education because Salman Khan came to their rescue when everybody failed them!
